GATHER

"Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved."

When Rod laid out the vision for "being the Church" a couple of weeks ago I became really excited to see a whole church take steps towards living out Christ's commission to us. This is something that my wife and I have been attempting to do for the last three years on our street corner in Alger Heights. During nice weather, we gather with neighbors every Wednesday night for a meal, and most nights we stay out on the patio late into the evening. Some of these neighbors are Christ-followers, others are not, but there is a genuine love for each other.

These late nights on the patio have given birth to great conversations, and there is a feeling of "togetherness" that is evident in our neighborhood. We share lawn mowers, snow blowers, swimming pools, we watch each other's kids. If our fridge breaks down at 11:30 at night, we wake the neighbors up to borrow their fridge space. I've taken 3am trips to Detroit when a neighbor's car broke down on the way to the Airport and he needed to catch a 6am flight. This idea of "being the church" is something that Heidi and I have made an intentional effort of doing over the last three years.

Lately we've been trying harder to couple our efforts in the neighborhood by being more committed to praying for those around us. We're anxiously waiting for God to open up doors for our conversations and love for each other to go deeper.

It's been amazing to watch our neighbors grow through prayer each week. One in particular. She came not knowing how to pray, let alone what to pray. We invited her to come and learn, to listen and see what God is doing in our midst.
She prayed a few days ago. The heavens opened up because she stormed the gates of heaven. And the Holy Spirit came, filled our home, filled this dear soul and gave her a gift, the gift of mercy... right before our eyes. As we prayed together! Right before our eyes a miracle, a new birth! And we sat in amazement as God moved in our very midst. A new heart, a new home for Jesus, a new life and a gift for mercy, for hurting folks, for poor folks, oppressed folks. Right in front of us.
Her husband lost his job 6 days later. Huh!
She is full of hope for her hopeless one, encouragement for her discouraged man, offering a balm of healing for him.
Answers to prayer.
